La tecnología en la clase (Technology in the Classroom)

Is the use of technology in the classroom advancing students' knowledge or is it creating a dependency? One of the most important parts of teaching is being able to connect the core material or subject to students' lives. Without this connection, many will ask the dreaded question - "When am I ever going to use this?" So, when contemplating whether or not technology is relevant in education, the answer is a resounding yes. Technology, whether as simplistic as using a white board to illustrate a concept or as complicated as an iPad, is a necessity to teach and motivate students in the learning process. Nonetheless, the use of technology can create a dependency. Can you function without your "i" product? How many pieces of technology do you use in one day? Would you be lost without your cell phone? So, what do you think?

  1. I can live without my iblender, but I don't think kids coming up today can. I think the amount of technology wrapped up in a modern cell phone is going to be so ingrained in our student's heads that asking them to go without will be near impossible and the key (I think) will be moderation, but some inclusion in the classroom.

  2. I think technology can advance students' knowledge if used correctly. However, it can create a dependency if you have to Google everything and then it just becomes a convenience. You’re not constructing knowledge; you’ve just become able to retrieve information off the internet.

  3. I plan on using technology at all times. I think the name of your blog gives me even more reason to use technology. There are all sorts of translators and stuff out there that you can use to reach those who do not speak English.

  4. I struggle with this question as well. While working with teens at UNI I notice such a dependency on their own world built on technology. They often say it is their "escape", which I must admit when I need a good run or a chance to check out, I turn to my form of technology, a music playing device. But with that said, I feel that when this generation becomes so dependent on technology that they can't function with out it you will end up losing the beauty of the written, the thought put into long and arduous research papers, the development of thinking though issues and reasoning, unless technology is used correctly. This means to me, used for the correct assignments, in the a moderate amount and not a source to become dependent on for ourselves as we teach as models for the students.

  5. I use technology everyday. I can not decide if this is a good or bad thing. I think that as we become more reliant on technology, people will not survive without their technological devices.

  6. I feel lost without my iPhone, and I'm no spring chicken, so I don't think it's fair to ask kids to separate themselves from technology. We are just going to have to figure out how it will enhance their learning experience and integrate it with some more old fashioned learning. Like books and pencils.

  7. I dropped my phone in the toilet a month ago and during the time that I didn't have my phone I thought I was going to lose my mind! I think that we just have to come to terms w the fact that we all have phones attached to our bodies!

  8. Can I live without my i-gadgets? Yes becuse I don't have any! As far as technology is concerned, I think that it is the only way that you and I as social studies teachers will be able to make history come alive for our students. If we like technology or not, we will need to learn it!
